Portfolio Committee on Police Chairperson Ian Cameron says the arrests of Crime Intelligence Head, Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo, and other high-ranking  South African Police Service (SAPS) officials point to a deeper crisis inside the organisation’s senior leadership.

Yesterday, members of the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Investigating Directorate against Corruption (IDAC) arrested Khumalo and other senior officials at OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park on the East Rand.

They are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today.

The exact nature of the charges is unknown, although corruption is suspected.

Cameron says he expects more arrests will be made in the coming months.

“It’s the first time, according to my knowledge, that we’ve had a list of four generals, two brigadiers and a colonel being arrested from the SAPS. I wouldn’t be surprised if more is coming.”

“I am very worried. It is a serious integrity failure of the SAPS. None of us are surprised, I guess, but it remains shocking. It shouldn’t be this way, but on the other side, it is encouraging to know that there is a cleaning-up process going on,” adds Cameron.
