The Western Cape Government has officially launched a safety programme identified as Planet Youth in Mitchell’s Plain on the Cape Flats.

The initiative is aimed towards building healthier, safer and more supportive environments for young people.

The programme takes the form of an open and interactive dialogue with families, caregivers and teachers. It also involves a survey conducted among grade eight and nine learners for an area-based approach to enhancing safety.

Provincial Minster of Health, Mireille Wenger, says the programme has been rolled out to about 130 schools in the most crime ridden areas of the province.

“It’s a programme that we’ve massively scaled up across the Western Cape. We’ve surveyed around 50 000 young people in grades eight and nine at many schools right across the province. They do an anonymous survey and tell us how they are thinking  and feeling and once we have all the data analysed, we have community based responses.”
