Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Igbo socio-cultural group, has hinted at its readiness to be fully involved in national politics.

Rising from its election, where Chief Emeka Egwuonwu emerged as President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Cross River State for a four-year term, the group affirmed it would begin to work actively towards the 2027 general election.

The election was held today in Ikom, in central Cross River State.

In his acceptance speech, Egwuonwu said his election marked a new dawn, as Igbos would no longer play armchair politics, whether in Cross River or at the national level.

“We will be fully and actively involved in politics, starting from the 2027 national elections,” Egwuonwu assured.

“Our active participation in politics will be part of efforts to ensure our people reap the dividends of good governance.”

He stated that it would no longer be business as usual, as he would use the umbrella group to mobilise all to prioritise their interest.

He maintained that he would discharge his duties without fear or favour.

“It is not going to be business as usual. I am going to pilot the affairs of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Cross River with all I have in me.

“We’ll work with the state government for greater success.

“We’re determined to make a difference by advancing Igbo people in every sphere both at home and abroad,” Egwuonwu assured.

Hailing the smooth conduct of the election, Governor Bassey Otu congratulated Egwuonwu on his emergence as leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in the state.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Non-Indigene Affairs, Mazi Okey Maduekwe, Otu assured of his government’s readiness to support Egwuonwu’s efforts at unifying the group.

He also assured that his government had provided a conducive and secure environment for investment and business to flourish.

“You can see that the Igbos are happy here in Cross River, and as I have supported them. They have also been very supportive of my government,” he said.
