Western Cape Chairperson for Community Policing Board, Fransina Lukas, says they are concerned about the safety of their members in communities affected by crime and gang violence.

She was speaking in Mitchell’s Plain where provincial police management met with a host of Community Police Forums (CPFs) from across the Western Cape, following a string of mass murders on the Cape Flats in the past few weeks.

Police are investigating a number of murder cases following various shooting incidents in the Cape Metro.

Affected areas include suburbs of Mitchells Plain, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha, claiming scores of lives from gangsterism, extortion and taxi violence.

“We are part of these communities. We are coming from those communities and we experience what our communities are experiencing on a daily basis. We know that more can be done to support our CPFs. We do get support, but obviously, more can be done, especially when it comes to resourcing CPFs to ensure that they and our neighbourhood watches are our blue officers and our communities are safe as well,” says Lukas.
