Super Falcons star Esther Okoronkwo has said that Nigeria was on the verge of losing their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON title but for the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee, VAR.

The Super Falcons came from 2-0 down to beat hosts Morocco in the final of the competition.

Okoronkwo scored one goal and provided an assist to help Nigeria claim a record 10th title at Stade Olympique de Rabat on Saturday night.

Nigerian defender Twanyanyukwa found herself at the centre of controversy after the referee awarded a penalty to the Atlas Lionesses in the 79th minute.

However, VAR insisted that the decision be reviewed, prompting the Namibian referee to reverse her initial call.

Player of the Match, Esther Okoronkwo, highlighted the importance of VAR in ensuring fairness, which she said played a role in their victory.

“I felt like she [the referee] got most of the calls right. Thank God, there’s VAR — she called a penalty against us, but she was able to go to the monitor and saw it wasn’t a penalty,” Okoronkwo told reporters at the post-match press conference.

The Super Falcons have been commended by the President of Nigeria for their triumphant victory over the hosts.
