Troops of operation Hadin Kai have repelled a coordinated attack by fighters of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Gwoza town in Borno State.

The attempted assault occurred on Friday afternoon during a heavy rainstorm, which the insurgents used as cover to infiltrate the town from the Izge–Pridang–Baikee axis and the Mandara Mountains.

Their targets were key strategic locations within Gwoza.

However, troops that were on alert responded swiftly, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle that forced them to retreat after suffering significant losses.

Security sources spoke to Zagazola makama, suggest the attack may have been in retaliation for recent airstrikes carried out under Operation KALACHEN WUTA, which killed several ISWAP fighters and reportedly wounded a senior commander, Abou Moussad Albarnawi.

After the confrontation, normalcy has returned to Gwoza, while troops continue to pursue fleeing insurgents with intensified ground and aerial fire missions. No casualties were reported among the Nigerian forces.
