Two young boys (Almajirai) have died, while four others are receiving treatment in the hospital, after allegedly consuming a poisonous substance that was thrown over a fence to them in the Gwammaja area, Kotu Street, in Kano city.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday, according to their teacher, Malam Nafiu, who exclusively spoke to DAILY POST.

The deceased children, Abdullahi (12) and Aminu (14), had been brought from Dandume Local Government Area in Katsina State to study the Qur’an in Kano.

“It was a substance that is usually added to tea. Someone—whose identity remains unknown threw it over the fence to them. Thinking it was milk, they mixed it and drank it on Wednesday. Shortly after, they began to fall seriously ill. Four of them have recovered, but sadly, two passed away,” Malam Nafiu explained.

Although the exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed, foam was reportedly seen around the mouths of the deceased, suggesting they may have consumed poison.

Police officers who visited the scene have begun investigations and have requested to speak with the four surviving children.

The children’s parents have already been contacted and are reportedly on their way from Dandume in Katsina State.

Attempts to reach the Kano State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, did not respond to calls.

The substance believed to be the poison has been secured and handed over to security agencies for detailed investigation to determine its contents.

Meanwhile, a resident of the area,Tahir Majid, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying the community is in shock.

“We have never witnessed such a tragedy in this neighborhood. These children were hardworking and striving to fend for themselves. This incident has deeply shaken us. We hope the government will carry out a thorough investigation to uncover the true cause of their death,” he said.

At the time of reporting, the children’s bodies were still at their teacher’s residence, awaiting funeral rites following the conclusion of initial investigations.

More updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
