As the bail application of Tiffany Meek, Jayden-Lee Meek‘s mother unfolds in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, questions are being raised about the thoroughness of the investigation and whether all possible leads have been explored.
With public scrutiny intensifying, both the prosecution and defence face mounting pressure to present compelling evidence that could sway the outcome of this closely watched case.
The matter has been rolled over to Monday for closing arguments by Meek’s defence counsel.
Meek faces four charges including murder, defeating the ends of justice and obstruction of justice.
During the cross-examination of the investigating officer, defence counsel, Noven Naidoo raised the issue of a video allegedly showing a sniffer-dog unit tracing a scent from Tiffany Meek’s flat to another apartment that was reportedly never searched.
Naidoo questioned whether the officer was aware of the video and if it indicated a missed search. However, Magistrate Anneline Africa dismissed the suggestion, saying the defence was relying on assumptions rather than on verified evidence.
Naidoo also questioned why it took days to secure Jayden-Lee’s school bag as evidence inside Meek’s flat and if it was tested for fingerprints.
“The applicant, her family and members of the public could go in and out of the flat. If the accused knew she was going to get charged for the murder, she had access to that school bag so don’t you think she was going to dispose of it? Do you agree with that? So you saw the bag and photographed it but left it there and two days later you decide you need the exhibit then you went back and found it lying in the same place. Is that your evidence? Do you have an affidavit that says she left the bag there? So the evidence was never there, she stands by her word that the evidence was planted from the 14th to the 15th.”
The defence challenged claims the community had turned against Meek, pointing to two private investigators who say they can find the real culprit.
Outside the court, Fleurhof residents braved the inclement weather holding placards calling for “Justice for Jayden Lee.”
The bail hearing has been adjourned to Monday for closing arguments, with judgment expected on Tuesday.
