The Southern Taraba People’s Assembly has debunked a media report claiming that former Defence Minister, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (rtd), has endorsed Chief Bulus Maiyaki for the Southern Taraba senatorial seat in 2027, describing it as the handiwork of political mischief makers.
In a statement issued on Friday in Jalingo, the group’s National Coordinator, Comrade Ishaku Danlami, condemned the publication, saying it was designed to create confusion, heighten unnecessary political tension, and sow division among socio-political interests in the zone.
Danlami alleged that those behind the rumour are a group of “desperate politicians” who view Chief Maiyaki’s growing popularity as a threat to their waning political influence.
He accused them of having no tangible legacy from their time in public office, instead promoting intertribal hostility.
According to him, the same individuals have a long history of targeting Maiyaki, dating back to the administration of former Governor Jolly Nyame, who had appointed him to key positions.
Danlami noted that despite attempts to sideline him during the tenure of the late Governor Danbaba Suntai, Maiyaki went on to secure a role at the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), where he currently serves as Director of Procurement, influencing numerous rural electrification projects across Southern Taraba.
The group stressed that TY Danjuma is not known for issuing political endorsements but for supporting credible candidates, adding that Chief Maiyaki meets all the requirements to represent Southern Taraba at the National Assembly.
They also warned against attempts to drag Danjuma’s name into political propaganda.
While Maiyaki has not formally declared his political ambition due to his civil service status, the group said growing consultations and widespread goodwill indicate he could emerge as a unifying candidate in 2027.
