The State, in the case of six men standing trial for the murder of 18 people at Ngobozana Village in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, has called two witnesses to give evidence on Wednesday.

The trial is held in the Mthatha High Court special sitting in Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court.

The accused are facing a string of charges, including murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to murder, and kidnapping, for the mass murder of 18 people in Ngobozana Village last year.

The first witness was the mother of one of the deceased, Ruth King, who was shot and killed in September last year.

The mother is one of the survivors who escaped death on that fateful morning.

The visibly terrified witness gave details about the day of the massacre. She told the court that they were still sleeping in the early hours of the morning when she heard a stone hitting the front door. She says the door was then kicked open before many people stormed the house, shouting.

Later, she heard gunshots and her daughter Ruth screaming, calling her for help. She broke down and cried as she testified that she and two other women hid behind the bed as the gunshots rang out.

The case has been postponed till Thursday morning, when the State is expected to call the next witness.
