South Africa have completed the Incoming Series and their preparations for the defence of their Rugby Championship title with a third successive victory. The Springboks beat a spirited Georgia 55-10 at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday evening.
The visitors stunned the near-capacity crowd into silence with a try from a rolling maul in the third minute.
The defending Rugby World Cup champions only took the lead in the 14th minute after tries by two of the front row debutants, prop Boan Venter and hooker Marnus van der Merwe.
Two more tries, a second by the Nelspruit-born Van der Merwe, gave the home side a 22-10 lead at halftime.
The Springboks managed to score five more tries, two by wing Edwill van der Merwe, in a disjointed performance. However, the lack of cohesion was understandable given the rotational nature of coach Rassie Erasmus’ approach, which has already used 46 players this season.
Thank you @GeorgianRugby for a tough Test here in Mpumalanga and safe travels home 🤝 #Springboks #ForeverGreenForeverGold #RSAvGEO pic.twitter.com/AvniYwYIWV
