As political organisations prepare for the upcoming Liberation Movements Summit in South Africa this weekend, many citizens of the region hope that their leaders will have honest, frank, and robust discussions about the challenges their countries face.
The summit will be convened under the theme: “Defending the Liberation Gains, Advancing Integrated Socio-Economic Development, Strengthening Solidarity for a Better Africa.”
It will see the ANC hosting the leaders of FRELIMO, SWAPO, ZANU-PF, and the MPLA on Sunday. It will be a moment of reflection, as the liberation movements have come under fire for failing to deliver on some promises.
Liberation Movement Summit | ANC to host leaders amid growing challenges
It will be a moment of reflection as the liberation movements are under pressure to deliver on some promises.
Many have suffered reduced electoral support or lost elections. This weekend will be crucial for these organisations’ leaders, as they will engage with each other.
Dr. Charles Mubita addressed these concerns before the Namibian elections last year.
“The liberation movement, and I believe we will at some point in time have to retreat, and you know, take stock that the enemy that we fought politically and militarily is now economically trying to fight us back. It’s not because of anything, the interest is because we discovered oil and gas and they are interested in that, they want that by all means,” says Dr Charles Mubita, Swapo Party School.
The African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the opening address. Other countries that have supported the liberation organisations in Southern Africa will also attend as observers.
