Team South Africa could not add to the one gold medal it’s won at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore on Tuesday.
Teenager Chris Smith was the only South African in action in the evening session on day four of the swimming event.
Swimming in lane two, the 19-year-old who qualified joint fifth fastest for the 50 meters breaststroke final, recorded another personal best time.
Smith touched the wall in 26,75 seconds, two hundredths of a second quicker than his previous personal best set in the semifinals on Tuesday. But this time, it was only good enough for sixth place.
The race was won by Italian Simone Cerasuolo in 26,54 seconds, a first title at the world championships for the 22-year-old.
