The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) says it is actively working to find ways to ensure the safety of officials handling sensitive investigations and cases in municipalities.

This follows a series of incidents where officials investigating corruption have faced threats and even been killed.

The most recent case involves Mpho Mafole, a forensic audit head at the Ekurhuleni Municipality, who was fatally shot last week in a drive-by shooting.

It’s understood that Mafole was investigating a R2-billion shortfall in the City of Ekurhuleni finances at the time of his death.

The motive for his killing is being investigated by the police.

SALGA Gauteng Chairperson, Jongizizwe Dlabathi, “We are really working very hard to protect our supply chain management from being compromised, manipulated. We are engaged in a discussion on how better we can provide protection, really to those who are closely working on issues of supply chain management. But as I said we don’t want officials to be deterred by this we will make sure that we protect them by all means.”
