The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) will on Tuesday march to Nedlac to protest for proposed amendments to labour laws.

The protest targets what Saftu calls detrimental changes to the Labour Relations Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act, National Minimum Wage Act, and Employment Equity Act.

Saftu’s National Organiser, Lebogang Phanyeko, says the federation views the changes as weakening worker protection and potentially leading to apartheid-style dismissals.

“We are going to have a second protest for this year. We had our first protest on May Day. We are going directly now to Nedlac, where the dialogue policies are being discussed. So, we are uniting with different formations, civic formations, casual workers advice office, independent unions, legal officers. All of them, we’re going to protest tomorrow. We’re going to give the memorandum of demands to the executive director,” says Phanyeko.
