Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe says South Africa should not be bullied into trading its critical minerals based on unfavorable terms and conditions.
He says South Africa should not be apologetic for being a BRICS partner because it destabilizes the balance of forces and global leadership.
He was delivering a keynote address at the G20 Critical Mineral Engagement in Sandton, north of Johannesburg.
Mantashe stressed that if being a BRICS member attracts tariffs from the US, then South Africa should diversify its markets.
“The most important thing for us as developing economies is that we should not be bullied for what we own, we must have a view. And our view must be respected that we mine these critical minerals, if people need them, they must talk to us. We must not give them critical minerals in their own terms and our view are ignored. I’m talking for the industry now. You get 30% tariff imposed on you, please sell those critical minerals somewhere else, where there are no tariffs and where you’ll get optimal value,” says Mantashe.
