Zimbabwe assumed the presidency of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP15) at the 15th meeting of the conference in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
Delegates from 172 countries are participating in this year’s conference.
The Ramsar Convention was signed in 1971 and is the world’s only international treaty focused exclusively on wetlands.
The week-long meeting is expected to culminate in the adoption of the Victoria Falls Declaration and a commitment to scale up wetland restoration and establish a Global Wetland Restoration Fund.
Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa says, “COP15 is expected to endorse the Victoria Falls declaration. This declaration aims to foster a legacy of Wetland Conservation through advocating for resource mobilisation, development, as well as increasing political commitment and investment towards Wetland management among other various issues.”
