Electricity Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says technical challenges at the Matimba power station in Lephalale, Limpopo, were responsible for the last two bouts of load shedding.

Ramokgopa is currently visiting the Matimba and Medupi power stations in Limpopo.

The country has not experienced load shedding in over four months.

Ramokgopa also announces the official return of Unit Four at Medupi to the national grid after its explosion in August 2021.

Ramokgopa says the repair work at Medupi showcases the country’s engineering industry’s capability to solve complex problems.

Ramokgopa elaborates, “The returned unit 4 after four years of being out was because of a catastrophic event. Therefore, the country was denied 800 MW. However, I really want to say that to the men and women here that the Medupi team has really exceeded our expectations with their young, black women and their exceptional competence and knowledge.

Zandi here has also helped us bring back units 1, 2, and 3 at Kusile, and she is also working on Kusile unit number 6.”
