President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation this Sunday night at 7pm on developments arising from statements made by KwaZulu-Natal Police commissioner, Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi made corruption allegations against senior police officials and the Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu.

In a statement released by the Presidency, Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says that Ramaphosa has been seized with the matter through consultations and will take the nation into his confidence this weekend.

“President Ramaphosa was attending a BRICS summit in Brazil on Sunday, 6 July 2025, when General Mkhwanazi outlined numerous allegations at a media briefing. The President undertook to attend to this development on his return from Brazil, in view of the implications for national security. President Ramaphosa has been seized with this matter in recent days and will, following various consultations, take the nation into his confidence at 19h00 on Sunday, 13 July 2025,” reads the statement in part.

Mkhwanazi’s allegations | President Ramaphosa to brief nation on Sunday:

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party has filed criminal charges against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and conspiracy to interfere with police investigations.

The party also laid a criminal charge against the minister for lying to Parliament about not knowing businessman Brown Mogotsi.

MK Party MP Mazolman Skosana, “What we did, we exactly opened a case against the Minister Senzo Mchunu and Sibiya based on what we were told by General Mkhwanazi. And General Mkhwanazi backed it up with some evidence. One obstruction of justice by Senzo Mchunu when General Sibiya said he was the one who instructed the National Commissioner. But today we know the National Commissioner yesterday denied that he has ever wrote any letter or be instructed by the minister to say the task team dockets have to be removed.”
