President Cyril Ramaphosa says he believes that the BRICS Summit will be a success. He says many of the issues that are going to be addressed or agreed on are important for the geopolitics of the world.
These include issues of trade, environment, climate and finance among others. Ramaphosa was speaking on the sidelines of the two-day summit in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Ronald Lamola says the BRICS countries remain united amid geopolitical instability. Speaking to the SABC Lamola has urged member countries to work together and deal with the tariff war affecting the world economy.
“We believe we will emerge united with the declaration that has got good ambitions that are for the development of the global south but also for the entire globe. Progressive internationalism. So the declaration will speak on all those and once a declaration is adopted I believe the whole will see that we remain united.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin has told the BRICS summit that member countries that the liberal model of globalisation is becoming obsolete.
Speaking via a video link, Putin also called on the BRICS countries to step up cooperation in a range of spheres, including natural resources, logistics, trade, and finance.
Putin could not physically attend the summit due to the warrant of arrest hanging over his head by International Criminal Court.
This time China is represented by Prime Minister Li Qiang instead of the 72-year-old leader, Xi Jinping.
The President of Brazil Lula da Silva has called for more trade activities among member states.
“The fear of a nuclear catastrophe has returned to everyday life. The constant violations of states’ territorial integrity, to the detriment of negotiated solutions, undermine efforts toward nuclear non-proliferation.”
And calls for the transformation of the multilateral system are getting louder.
The BRICS summit will conclude on Monday where a declaration is expected from the bloc’s leaders.
