Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Zolile Williams says the disaster relief funding by the national government is not enough to cater for all the damages and losses caused by last month’s floods.

The province will receive R504 million from national government’s R1,2 billion disaster recovery grant to rebuild infrastructure damaged by last month’s severe floods.

The province was the hardest hit, with roads, homes, and infrastructure destroyed across several districts.

Over a hundred people died in the floods and many others displaced.

Williams says the money is expected to be disbursed in phases, starting this week, while wait for more funding.

“As you’d know, it wouldn’t be enough. The challenge is we have to construct temporary units. Now in the allocation we are receiving, I don’t seem to see any allocation into our provincial human settlement department for recovery units. You know that livestock has perished; plantation fields have been destroyed, and there’s no allocation as yet to restore those people’s fields and the livestock,” adds Williams.
