President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation at 7pm following accusations last weekend by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The SABC will carry the President’s address live on its channels including radio, TV and online.
Mkhwanazi made allegations last weekend against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and senior police officials.
Political Analyst Professor Ntsikelelo Breakfast believes Ramaphosa must place Mchunu on special leave.
“We are all hoping that he will take us seriously and not let us down by sort of like undermining us or insulting our intelligence as if we cannot read between the lines that there are problems in SAPS. What I cannot confirm at the moment, in my opinion, is the validity of those claims. But, and it’s a big but, I think I can confirm the brokenness of SAPS because I think that is quite palpable to see.”
Meanwhile, opposition political parties are calling for Mchunu to be fired ahead of Ramaphosa’s address.
Both the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) have opened criminal cases against Mchunu, while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called for his immediate suspension.
The DA has accused Mchunu of misleading the public and breaching his constitutional duties.
On the other hand, MKP has opened a case of obstruction of justice, abuse of power and conspiracy to undermine investigations.
This after Mkhwanazi has accused Mchunu of giving instructions to withdraw over 120 case dockets which were investigating political assassinations.
