The Plateau State House of Assembly has called on council chairmen of the 17 local government areas in the state to provide adequate support to non-conventional security operatives, to complement the efforts of conventional security agencies in addressing security challenges affecting some communities in the state.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Dickson Chollom, member representing Barkin Ladi Constituency, and seconded by Hon. Eli Bako of Rukuba-Irigwe Constituency.
Chollom drew the attention of the House to the growing insecurity in his constituency (Barkin Ladi), citing a recent incident in which unknown individuals invaded Mazat (Ganandaji) community in Barkin Ladi on July 15, 2025, destroying maize farms.
“This attack resulted in significant losses, and it threatens food sufficiency in the area,” he said.
In his prayers, he urged the House to appeal to the executive and relevant security agencies “to investigate the act of vandalism, apprehend the perpetrators, and bring them to justice to serve as deterrent to similar acts in the future.”
He further called for intensified efforts by security agencies to safeguard lives and property.
The lawmaker also appealed for compensation or support for the affected farmers to cushion the impact on their livelihoods and food security.
Speaking further, Chollom emphasised that, “There is the need for Local Government Councils to support vigilante groups as a complimentary measure to the security agencies in various communities.”
After thorough deliberations, the House unanimously adopted all the prayers.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel Gapyil, subsequently directed the Majority Leader to invite all council chairmen for an interactive session to find practical and lasting solutions to the issue of insecurity bedevilling the state.
