Abia State University, ABSU Uturu, has said that the lecturers in the institution are not being owed salaries, stating that those claiming to be owed for twelve months were disengaged over a year ago for alleged irregular appointments.

A group of lecturers under the aegis of the “2023 Employment Set” had on Saturday addressed the press in Umuahia, where they lamented that their salaries stopped coming since June 2024, despite not receiving disengagement letters from ABSU.

The 2023 set begged Governor Alex Otti to consider them as “his own children” by intervening in their plight.

But presenting the university’s position, Abia State University, in a statement signed by the Registrar, Acho Elendu, made it clear that staff have been enjoying regular payment of salaries since the assumption of office of Governor Alex Otti on May 29, 2023.

He said that the allegation was a calculated attempt to blackmail the Abia State University management and the management of the Abia State Government.

He said that those who claimed to have been owed twelve months of salaries were disengaged over a year ago, as, according to the statement, their appointments were allegedly surrounded by questionable circumstances.

The university said that Governor Otti approved the payment of eleven months’ salary arrears owed to staff of the university by the previous administration in the state, confirming that ten out of the eleven months have already been paid.

“The agitators who were given temporary appointments by the previous administration in 2023 were disengaged over a year ago due to irregularities in their appointments.”

ABSU explained that the ongoing recruitment exercise approved by the state government provides a fair and transparent opportunity for all qualified candidates, including those disengaged, to reapply for jobs.

The management further urged members of the public to disregard the false claims.
