An eight-year-old child has died and over 120 people have been left displaced after a fire ripped through the Zone O Informal Settlement at Kayamandi in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.

Humanitarian aid organisation, Gift of the Givers says 43 structures were destroyed, and the deceased’s grandmother is in critical condition in hospital.

The organisation’s spokesperson Ali Sablay says this is part of a growing trend of winter fires in informal areas as residents try to stay warm.

He says the organisation will provide hot meals, bottled water, hygiene packs, baby care packs and blankets.

This incident comes as another cold front is expected to hit the Western Cape on Wednesday.
