The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it will not be opposing bail in the theft case against 10 police officers arrested in Ekurhuleni.

The officers made their first appearance at the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, east of Johannesburg, and began their bid to be released on bail pending investigations.

The officers have told the court that it’s in the interest of justice that they be granted bail. The bail application is expected to continue on Wednesday.

It’s alleged they raided a shop in Edenvale in June and allegedly stole cigarettes worth R150 000 and R35 000 in cash as well as packets of Panado.

NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says the state will not be opposing the bail application. “It was found that some of the seized items were not registered in the SAP 13, which is the register to record and manage seized items that are the subject of investigation. The charge of theft emanates from the evidential material that is contained in the docket. Once the prosecutor read all the contents of the docket, the only charge that could be preferred against all the accused was that of theft. As the NPA will receive the docket this morning, we studied the contents of the docket, and once we established that there were prospects of a successful prosecution, we then enrolled the matter.”
