South Africa have been dethroned as Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions. Nine-time champions Nigeria broke Banyana Banyana’s hearts with a goal on 90 minute for a 2-1 semifinal victory in Casablanca, Morocco.
The Super Falcons scored via a penalty by their captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, on the stroke of halftime to take a slender lead into the break.
A penalty by Linda Motlhalo just before the hour mark drew Banyana level. But a lapse in concentration cost South Africa at the death when Michelle Alzie capitalized on a defensive error to score the winning goal for Nigeria.
It was the Super Falcons’ ninth victory in 12 WAFCON matches over Banyana, and they’re on course for a record 10th title.
South Africa, on the other hand, have been relegated to the playoff match for the bronze medal on Friday.
