The Nigerian Navy has concluded plans to establish a naval base in Yauri, Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, to enhance security along River Niger and the Northwestern corridor.

A delegation from the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, announced the development during a courtesy visit to Governor Nasir Idris at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.

Leader of the delegation, Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, said the move is part of the Navy’s expanded maritime security strategy, extending beyond offshore operations to secure critical inland waterways like River Niger.

“River Niger, while a national asset supporting agriculture and energy, is increasingly being exploited by criminal elements for smuggling arms and other illicit activities,” Nwatu said.

He noted that the river has become a convergence point for insecurity and that a naval presence in Kebbi would complement the Navy’s existing base in Niger State, thereby ensuring a more effective security network along the waterway.

Governor Idris described the initiative as timely and strategic, given the security challenges affecting southern Kebbi.

“We have never had a naval base in Kebbi. This development is commendable, especially with the need to secure River Niger, which our limited marine police cannot adequately cover,” he said.

The governor also cited Kebbi’s border with Niger and Benin Republics as a reason for heightened security infrastructure.

He assured the delegation of the state government’s support, including the provision of temporary accommodation for personnel while permanent structures are being constructed.
