Mourners continue to pay their respects at the homestead of the late former Deputy President David Mabuza in Barberton, Mpumalanga. African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League members visited the Mabuza family and held a prayer service.
The 64-year-old Mabuza died after a short illness at a Johannesburg Hospital last week.
There was a hive of activity outside the Mabuza homestead. The ANC Women’s League paid their respects through the prayer service, Manyano. They remembered Mabuza as a unifier and a true servant of the people.
“Mabuza was a unifier, he made sure all the leagues were united and that is why they are here to pay their respect,” says Nokuthula Nqaba, ANCWL Secretary-General.
Those who worked with Mabuza for years described him as an enigma, silent, yet ambitious.
“Mabuza was silent and never said anything, but he had his lieutenants who will do his work on the side,” says Jacques Modipane, former Mpumalanga MEC.
Mabuza is hailed as having contributed to women’s empowerment, including in sports.
He sponsored an elderly women’s soccer team.
“He supported us and bought us a soccer kit and soccer boats,” says Reginah “Mama Fish” Mokoena from Phola Football Club.
In 2014, Mabuza established the David Mabuza Foundation, with a focus on education and social upliftment for the disadvantaged. The foundation has promised to continue its work.
“In the first year, the foundation helped 3,000 children to high education. We have built houses, all over the province. He wanted to help the community,” says Gugu Nyarenda, David Mabuza Foundation.
ANC Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, is expected to address one of the three memorial services scheduled for Thursday.
