Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has vehemently denied ever meeting controversial businessman Vusimuzi “CAT” Matlala.

This is contained in a statement Mchunu has just released.

The statement further reads, “The Minister did however, initiate a review of the SAPS tender awarded to him when suspicions of possible wrongdoing surfaced. It was the same tender which has since been terminated. ”

Meanwhile, civil society movement, Defend Our Democracy, is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently address the nation following KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s damning allegations.

Mkhwanazi has accused senior police officials including Mchunu of meddling in police operations and having links to criminal syndicates. The movement has also called a full, independent judicial commission of inquiry into some criminals’ alleged capture of the
criminal justice system.

Defend Our Democracy Executive Director, Naledi Kuali, “It’s an absolute disaster. It requires the utmost urgency because it speaks to institutions that are tasked with public safety. They’re tasked with the rule of law, and a delay will speak to a lackluster reaction. It had to be a high priority because the country right now sits and they’re concerned in the people they trust them most in times of need – there’s a loss of faith already.”

VIDEO: General Secretary of South African Policing Union (SAPU) Tumelo Mogodiseng says morale among police officers is at its lowest, adding that politicians are meddling in police operational matters.
