The Democratic Alliance (DA) says their Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) application into the disciplinary case involving Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s VIP protection unit exposes a breakdown in accountability in the police service and a cover up.
The eight officers were filmed assaulting passengers and the driver of a car on the N1, in Johannesburg in 2023.
They were acquitted by the police service in May following an internal disciplinary process.
The DA says the information it has acquired shows that instead of a swift and transparent disciplinary process, the case descended into what it calls a “two-year circus of postponements, procedural chaos and excuses”.
The DA says it was not just an administrative failure, but a deliberate failure of justice.
The eight officers are expected to appear in court next month for a verdict in their criminal trial.
