Makashule Gana requires enhanced safety at O.R Tambo Airport – SABC Information

Member of Parliament’s Transport Portfolio Committee, Makashule Gana has called for enhanced security measures at the country’s airports, particularly at the O.R Tambo International Airport. 

 This follows a serious security breach at OR Tambo after a passenger boarded a flight to Ethiopia with two training hand grenades in their checked luggage.

 The breach which was only discovered upon the passenger’s arrival at Bole International Airport in Ethiopia has led to Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) terminating its contract with Aviation Coordination Services (ACS).  

ACSA claims that the breach occurred in the Hold Baggage Screening area managed by ACS.

Gana says all they want is enhanced security at OR Tambo.

“It speaks to the ongoing dispute between ACS and ACSA in so far as who is supposed to be responsible in terms of handling the baggage and the screening. What we want to see is that there has to be enhanced security, because OR Tambo remains the busiest airport and it’s a concern.”
