Renowned Ugandan musician Joseph Mayanja, popularly known as Jose Chameleone, has announced plans to build a music and arts school in Yambio, a town in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria State.
Chameleone made the pledge during a public appearance in Yambio as part of the celebrations marking South Sudan’s 14th Independence Anniversary on July 9, 2025.
Addressing the youth, he said the school would be a token of appreciation for the unwavering support he has received from South Sudanese fans over the past 25 years of his music career.
He emphasized that the institution will focus on training and nurturing upcoming South Sudanese musicians, equipping them with the skills needed to succeed in the industry. Chameleone noted that the initiative stems from his strong emotional bond with the people of the region.
During his visit, he also paid a courtesy call to the King of Azande, His Majesty Atoroba Peni Rikito, and commended him for his efforts in promoting peace and unity within his kingdom.
Chameleone was among several Ugandan artists who performed at the Yambio celebration, alongside fellow star Eddy Kenzo.
The event was organized by South Sudanese music promoter Don Eddie of Don Promotions, in partnership with local entertainment stakeholders.
He received a warm welcome from senior state officials, including Acting Governor Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa, who praised Chameleone’s visit as a powerful gesture of unity and pan-African solidarity.
The Independence Day festivities were held across various regions of South Sudan, with the main national celebrations taking place in the capital,Juba.
