The Department of Correctional Services (DCS), together with the South African Police Service (SAPS), carried out a surprise raid at the Matatshe Correctional Centre in Thohoyandou on Friday evening.
The operation involved a thorough search of the facility.
National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, said that inmates often smuggle contraband into their cells after attending court appearances.
He confirmed that similar raids will be conducted at correctional facilities across the country as part of ongoing efforts to enhance security.
