The Johannesburg City Council is without a speaker after Nobuhle Mthembu was axed from her position through an Al-Jamah sponsored motion of no confidence.

The speaker has been accused of being biased and failing to maintain the integrity of the council.

Some parties in the council maintained that the Action SA councilor has been compromised by the actions of her party.

Her party earlier maintained that they are willing to give up the speaker position, rather than fail the residents of Johannesburg.

Acting speaker and chair of chairs Adolph Marema read out the votes.

“Those that are supporting that the speaker must go are 212, and those against the motion are 48. Unfortunately there is no one abstaining. Thank you very much, this means the motion is carried. I am sure we all know that the position of the speaker is vacant.”
