Political analyst Roland Henwood says the Iranian government’s attack on an American military base in Qatar, was an attempt to save face among citizens of the country.
The United States at the weekend launched air strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities.
Tehran responded by firing missiles at the US Al-Udeid base in Qatar which is America’s largest military base in the Middle East.
There have been no reports of casualties or injuries.
Henwood says Iran warned the US of its intentions well in advance,
“It’s an off-ramp for Iran to save face in the context of what has happened, for the domestic audience mostly. I say this because what we know is that the Iranians informed America they are going to launch the missiles to the base before the time. So, they had ample time to make sure that there would be no casualties. It did not hit anything significant. The US moved the aircrafts that were not in hardened shelters away from there, probably about ten days ago because they were planning, and they knew this was a risk.”
