Cyprus police have arrested a British man suspected of planning an “immediate attack” on the island and spying on British military bases in Cyprus on behalf of Iran.

The man is alleged to have links to Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC, according to the Telegraph UK.

The Iranian spy appeared before a judge on Saturday and his detention was extended by eight days.

The man is suspected of terrorism and espionage offenses.

Speaking on the development, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Israel, Gideon Sa’ar revealed that the target of the terrorist attack that was foiled, was meant for Israeli citizens in Cyprus.

“Thanks to the activities of the Cypriot security authorities, in cooperation with the Israeli security services, the terrorist attack was foiled,” Sa’ar said.

“Israel thanks Cyprus for its swift and effective actions. The Iranian criminal regime is deliberately targeting Israeli citizens both in Israel and abroad. Israel will continue to work to eliminate the existential threat posed by the Iranian terrorist regime.”
