Pope Leo XIV on Sunday joined the growing calls for a return to diplomacy in the Middle East, following yet another night of fighting in the region.

Leo described the overnight strikes in Iran as “alarming”, urging the international community to denounce the violence.

According to the pontiff, war does not resolve conflicts but rather inflicts profound wounds upon the people.

He made the remarks in a post shared via his official X account on Sunday.

“Alarming news continues to emerge from the Middle East, especially from Iran,” Leo said.

“Against this tragic backdrop, which includes Israel and Palestine, people’s daily suffering, especially in Gaza and the other territories, where the need for adequate humanitarian aid is becoming increasingly urgent, risks being forgotten.”

He added, “War does not solve problems; on the contrary, it amplifies them and inflicts deep wounds on the history of peoples, which take generations to heal.”

This comes after United States President Donald Trump disclosed that the US military had successfully attacked the Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan nuclear sites in Iran the previous night.
