The status of the ceasefire between Israel and Iran remains unclear hours after its announcement by US President Donald Trump.
Trump has announced on social media that a “complete and total” ceasefire between Iran and Israel had been reached and would begin in the early hours of this morning.
The post came mere hours after Iran had fired missiles at a US military base in Doha, projectiles that were intercepted by the Qatari State’s air defences, causing no deaths and casualties.
Iran’s Foreign Minister has since also taken to social media to announce that no agreement on a ceasefire had been reached but appeared open to the prospect.
Trump’s announcement, missile barrages continued between Israel and Iran into the early hours.
President Trump’s announcement was approached with some skepticism, given how soon it came after an Iranian missile launch against a US military base in Qatar.
Trump said the ceasefire would begin around 6am South African time. He then stated that on the assumption that all went well, he wanted to congratulate the two countries on having the stamina, courage and intelligence to end what he referred to as the 12-day war.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi posted later that there was no agreement on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations, but that Iran had no intention of responding provided the Israeli regime stopped its illegal aggression by 4am local time Tuesday in Iran.
