The Electoral Commission has confirmed the rejection of the Islamic State of Africa’s (ISA) application to register as a political party.

In a media statement, Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo cited three reasons for the decision: First, over 200 objections were received, with concerns that the party’s constitution promotes Sharia-based policies that conflict with South Africa’s secular values.

Second, ISA failed to submit the required 300 supporting signatures from registered voters.

Third, the party did not create sufficient public awareness, publishing its notice in a newspaper with limited circulation.

The ISA has 30 days to appeal the IEC’s decision.
