The Gauteng Department of Arts and Culture has vowed that the Mandela House Museum in Orlando West, Soweto, will not go under liquidation.
This after Soweto Tourism Association called on the provincial government to immediately attend to the long-standing issue of the liquidation of the museum.
The organisation says the process, initiated more than five years ago, remains unresolved.
The Mandela House Museum remains one of the most iconic tourist attractions in the country. It is where the late former statesman lived with his family from 1946 to 1962.
Gauteng Arts and Culture MEC, Matome Chiloane, says discussions with liquidators are at a promising stage.
“We spoke to the liquidators and we have made, through our office and the premier’s office, an offer for transfer of that property to the Con Hill agency. So, that process is there. We are waiting for feedback from the liquidators, so we will then be able to transfer the property. What we can assure you of is we will not allow the property to go under liquidation. That’s where we stop. Also, the foundation as well has been quite a bit of a challenge there that we’ve experienced. But where we are now, we’re in agreement that the only way, the only way that we can be able to assist and save the property is through the Con Hill,” says Chiloane.
