University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape says its newly unveiled Early Childhood Care and Education centre is meant to tackle the challenge of under-skilled ECD practitioners.
It aims to provide practical training and assessment for Early Childhood Development student teachers.
Fort Hare’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu says the centre will benefit the country’s education system.
“Our education system, all of it, is in need of as many efforts as possible to improve quality, to improve through the pass rate. This is part of our contribution. Normally, the focus is on matric and so on and so forth, but now our focus is at entry level and preschool kind,” says Buhlungu.

The Education Faculty Dean at the university, Tsediso Makoelle, says this facility will serve as a research centre for data relating to the Early Childhood Development Care field.
“The ECD centre is part of the early childhood ECD educator department, which will be conducting research on early childhood. They will also partner with other ECD centres around and share expertise and collaborate with those ECDs to uplift the standard of ECD in general, in the province,” says Makoelle.
