FlySafair says it is committed to resolving its pilots’ strike.
Wage talks between the airline and Solidarity will now resume at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in Centurion, Gauteng tomorrow.
The two parties met at the union’s offices in Johannesburg yesterday.
Around 200 pilots are on strike.
They are demanding a 10.5% salary increase but the airline is offering 5.7%.
The strike has led to the cancellation of several flights leaving passengers stranded.
The airline’s Chief Marketing Officer Kirby Gordon says, “The reality is that no one ever seeks to be in this situation and it stands to reason that the company takes the demands of the union very seriously in terms of being unviable in order to arrive ourselves with the situation.”
“If the demands had been reasonable, we obviously would have foregone it in the first place. So, we need to stand firm in terms of balancing the requirements of what were the demands and the interests of the pilots with the long term sustainability of the company and the jobs of the 1 700 other people that we employ.”
Gordon adds, “We always negotiate in good faith. These are ultimately our members that we look to have part of and we do need to find a middle ground. We’re very open to that, but there needs to be some movement on those sorts of numbers.”
