The trade union Solidarity says that FlySafair‘s pilots are willing to reconsider their wage demands if the current scheduling system is also addressed.
The pilots are seeking more predictable rosters and at least one guaranteed weekend off per month.
The union representing pilots at Centurion’s CCMA argues that the off days pilots receive, typically on weekdays, are insufficient, particularly for those with families.
Solidarity’s Deputy General-Secretary, Helgard Cronje, says there must be a balance in how the airline manages the pilots’ roster.
“Usually, the system would schedule off days, but it’s not to say that those off days would be during the weekend; it can be anytime of the week. Now, if your family, for example, if your wife works a different job and she is off over the weekends, your family is off during the weekend, children are not at school, you don’t have time to spend with them. If there’s a family event over the weekend, you cannot attend. So, it’s a simple thing, we aren’t saying they should go back to a fixed roster pattern, but they should at least be some form of predictability.”
