Flood: Ogun govt takes sensitisation marketing campaign to market, homes

In an effort to avert flooding, the Ogun State Emergency Management Agency, OGSEMA, has taken its sensitisation campaign to markets and residential areas across the state.

The places visited included Kuto, Amolasho, Gbangba and other locations in the Abeokuta South Local Government Area.

DAILY POST learnt that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s prediction that floods would impact several Nigerian states, including Ogun, prompted the start of the sensitisation campaign.

The acting Director of OGSEMA, Mr Soji Durojaye, during the sensitisation exercise, advised residents to take proactive measures against flooding as the rainy season worsened, warning that flood-prone communities should be on high alert.

Durojaye, emphasising the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, maintained that residents must also play their part by adhering strictly to safety guidelines.

He warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages and illegal construction on waterways and urged all to clear blocked drains and plant trees to reduce soil erosion.

He said, “I am appealing to community leaders and residents to help spread the message of environmental responsibility.

“NIMET had predicted heavy rainfall for the year, which could lead to flash floods in some areas. So, residents, especially those living in flood-prone areas, are to be vigilant and to consider relocating temporarily if the need arises.

“If every household ensures proper waste disposal and clears their surroundings, the impact of flooding will be greatly reduced.”

Mr Samuel Adegboyega, a resident of Amolasho, and Mrs Adetutu Mustapha, a trader in Kuto, both expressed gratitude for the sensitisation and pledged to fully abide by the warnings given.
