Eskom has urged the public to avoid illegal connections, warning that these overload the system and trigger widespread power interruptions.

The power utility says that to keep the electricity supply stable this winter, customers must buy electricity only from accredited vendors.

Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena says that system overload forces the utility to implement load reduction measures.

“Illegal electricity connections, including meter bypasses, and the unauthorised operation of the network, particularly the transformers, are not only dangerous, they are deadly and deemed as criminal offences. These actions pose a serious risk to public safety and undermine Eskom’s ability to deliver reliable electricity. Transformer explosions, fires, and electrocutions are often the result, placing entire communities, especially children, in harm’s way.”
