The death toll from flash flooding in central Texas has risen to 104, with dozens still missing as search and rescue efforts entered the fourth day on Monday, according to local authorities.
Kerr County, the hardest hit among 20 affected counties in the region, alone accounts for at least 84 of the fatalities, including 28 children.
Camp Mystic, a 99-year-old all-girls Christian summer camp along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, Monday grieved the loss of at least 27 campers as well as counselors after heavy rains led to multiple flash floods in central Texas on Friday and Saturday.
As of Monday evening local time, 10 girls and a counselor from the camp were still unaccounted.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is saddened by the loss of life due to the flooding in the US state of Texas, his spokesperson said Monday.
“The Secretary-General is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life, notably of a large number of children, caused by the recent floods in Texas, which struck during what should have been a time of celebration over the holiday weekend,” said the spokesman Stephane Dujarric in a statement.
Guterres extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and expressed his solidarity with all those impacted, the people of Texas and the US government, said the spokesman.
