KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says organised crime syndicates have infiltrated the country’s criminal justice system.

Mkhwanazi made the damning allegations during a media briefing in Durban.

He says a senior police officer and a civilian who are allegedly working with a syndicate are allegedly linked to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

Mkhwanazi says Mchunu gave an instruction that the task team into political killings in KwaZulu-Natal be disbanded after members of the syndicate were arrested last year. Members of the KwaZulu-Natal task team helped a Gauteng police unit to make the arrests.

Mkhwanazi says he is ready to take these criminals head-on.

“If an enemy comes to you, attack the enemy. Don’t allow the enemy to take advantage. You can’t just lay there. You have to fight. So that’s what we are doing in KwaZulu-Natal; we shall fight. This fight is very big and it needs people who are committed and not worried,” he adds.

“They are going to chase you, they are going to arrest you. Get out of that prison and fight. They are going to suspend you, they’re going to dismiss you. They’re going to get you out of the police. When you are out of the police, then join the men and women in the private sector who are dedicated to dealing with this criminality,” says Mkhwanazi.
