Disruptive snow warning issued for Japanese Cape – SABC Information

The Eastern Cape government says it has ramped up flood disaster relief efforts as the province braces for another cold front.

This comes after the South African Weather Services issued a level 1 warning for disruptive snow accompanied by cold temperatures.

Recent floods claimed the lives of at least 103 people, 32 of them being school children and damaged over 6 800 households, the province also suffered immense infrastructural damage.

A Provincial Joint Operations Centre is coordinating aid, with support from the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, South African Social Security Agency, and civil society.

Meanwhile, 100 230 temporary housing units are in the pipeline, with R120 million allocated and R461 million still needed.

More than a thousand people have received psychosocial support, while infrastructure repair costs are estimated at R5.04 billion.

Stakeholders, including the South African National Defense Force and private donors, continue to provide vital supplies.

The provincial government has also pledged continued, dignified support for all affected families.
