The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies says it will not tolerate digital platforms which fail to abide by the Films and Publications Act.

The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has ordered social media giant, Meta, to take down WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles depicting children involved in sexual acts.

The Digital Law Company took Meta to court on Monday arguing that the material had led to a lot of distress for school children depicted in the sexual videos.

Deputy Minister Mondli Gungubele says Regulators urge Meta to partner in protecting children online

“Now we depend on our complaint officers monitoring and the regulated companies reporting honestly and also stakeholders of different kinds actually.

On Meta, our attitude is that we do not want to establish an antagonistic relationship with these institutions we want to make sure that rather than them being our enemy, they should be our partner in protecting the children of our country.”
